Seventeen

Stopping by the grocery store had been a whim, but after seeing Janice and Corey, Jackson felt all those memories wash over him. He was grateful to the two of them and the many others who’d worked there when he’d been there. It was amazing that it took messing up like he had with the hotel rooms to help him meet some of the most influential people in his life.

Hailey drove them to a spot near Los Trancos, one of the entrances into Crystal Cove Beach. He’d only been there once, but it was still early afternoon, and only a few people sat on the sand.

Since it was January, it wasn’t quite the temperature for swimming, but something about the sand between his toes seemed to clear his mind. He waited while Hailey took off her shoes and rolled her pants up to her knees.

“It’s been forever since I’ve been here. It was one of our favorite places when I was growing up,” Hailey said, her eyes half-closed as the wind whipped her hair back. “When Junior and Penny were born, this was where we spent our summers, just the sand, the water, and a lot of laughter.”

They walked down to the water, and Jackson stepped onto the darker sand. “That sounds amazing. Like a fairy tale.”

He held his shoes in one hand, feeling the crisp air in his lungs. The sky was overcast, but it didn’t look like there was a threat of rain. This was what he’d needed after an emotional couple of days after the funeral.

“Oh, my life was no fairy tale. But I guess I can’t complain too much.” She paused, and he could feel her staring at him. “You mentioned you were in foster care?”

He nodded, not sure if he was ready to pull that particular box completely off the shelf. With all the questions she’d thrown at him today, it was bound to happen.

“How long were you in the system?” Her voice was soft, tender, and he turned to look at her, seeing no trace of mocking.

Blowing out a breath, he said, “About six years. My dad left before I was born. I moved with my mum several times, usually with whatever new boyfriend she had at that point. They’d be gone for a few days at a time, and when she had other babies, she’d leave them with me.”

Hailey gasped, and she placed her hand on his elbow, sending fire shooting up his arm to his shoulder. He tried not to look at it resting there, hoping she wouldn’t let go.

“My sister is eight years younger, and my brother is ten years younger. We’d gone through everything we could eat in the house, and my mum still hadn’t come back. I knocked on the neighbor’s door, asking for some food. When she came over and saw us there, she called the social workers, and we were all taken to foster care.”

“Did they keep the three of you together?” He could see the worry in her face as she waited for his answer.
